De-Windowsing

July 15, 2026, 2 p.m.
I think my de-windows’ing efforts are near an end now. I’m effectively down to two Windows machines, one of which is primarily a Linux machine, one which is a dedicated Windows lappy.
There is definitely some stuff that I can do on Windows that I can’t do on Linux. My multi-effects pedal doesn’t have a Linux app. I’ve got tons of Windows only music plugins that don’t run on Linux, as far as I know. Compiling my game for Windows and testing it requires a Windows machine. There are a few games that won’t run on Linux but fewer than you might think! I’m going to try to cartoon in Clip Studio Paint, and there’s probably a way to run it through Wine but I haven’t investigated yet.
But there are some things that do run on Linux that I wasn’t expecting. There’s web delivered versions Photoshop and Illustrator that work if I spoof the user agent. I wasn’t really expecting Unreal Engine Editor to run on Linux but it does, and pretty well! Reaper with some anti-intuitive settings changes does run on Linux with minimal audio lag, so that’s good.
Anyways, today’s a gym day then back to it. Stay cool, my cool friends!
